Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,

Grade 3/4 Coonawarra Camp

Over the past two days the Year 3/4 students have attended school camp at Coonawarra. The Coonawarra camp is an adventure camp that challenges the children to go outside their comfort zone and try a variety of outdoor activities. This year’s activities included; The Labyrinth, Climbing Wall, Giant Swing, Flying Fox and High Ropes. All of these activities challenge the children both mentally and physically and it so pleasing as teachers to see them take on these challenges in such a positive way. It is a highlight for the teachers to see the smile on their faces when they have successfully participated in these activities. This years Year 3/4’s took on these challenges and should be all really proud of what they have achieved.

Another challenge of going away on camp is that the children are away from families for the night. For some of the children, this is the first night that they have slept away from home. Like most years, there were a couple of tears and a few nervous moments, however all of the children did an amazing job.

Thank you to all of the teachers and support staff who attended camp. Your dedication to the students of St Patrick’s is greatly appreciated.

Grade 5/6 Hoop Time Basketball

Last Friday, we had a girls and a boys’ team compete in the Hoop Time Basketball Competition at the Gippsland Regional Sporting Complex in Sale. This was the first time since 2019 that the competition had been held, so it was great to be able to once again compete. Both of the teams played St Thomas’ Sale, St Mary’s Maffra and St Michael’s Heyfield in the pool games. Despite neither side winning a game, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and represented our school beautifully.

Foundation Students 100 Days of School  

Last Friday, our Foundation students also celebrated their 100^th day at St Patrick’s. This was a fantastic celebration, with the students thoroughly enjoying the day. I’m sure that you will all agree that the Foundation students have learnt so much in their first 100 days and we can’t wait to see what they achieve in the future. Thank you to all the parents who supported the day and to Miss Boyd, Miss Barclay and the support staff who made the day such a success.

School Closure Day – Friday, 12^th August

Next Friday, 12^th August is a whole school closure day. All the staff at St Patrick’s will be attending a professional learning day in Lakes Entrance that will focus the Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviour Support. By continuing this focus, staff will continue to develop their knowledge and skills in supporting and managing positive behaviours throughout St Patrick’s.

Bookweek 2022

Monday August 22nd - Friday 26^th August

Bookweek is coming up quickly and the books for bookfair arrived today!  It’s an exciting time and the students are really looking forward to it.

Monday 22^nd August – Students will go to the town library for a bookweek performance which is always great fun.

Wednesday 24^th - Friday 26^th August – Bookfair begins with loads of books and novelty items for sale in the library. The library will be open from 8.30am to 9.00am, recess and part of lunch and after school from 3.30pm to 4.00pm on each of the three days.

Books can be purchased by cash (preferred), or by online payment with Scholastic using the wish list form that will be sent home with each child. This form has the instructions on how the online payment can be done. There will be a receipt number that needs to be recorded and emailed to me (details at bottom), or by  writing it on the wishlist and returning it to me. Once I have received the receipt number, I will give the books purchased to your child. It is important when paying online that you check first if the item your child wants is available as we often sell out of books.

Friday 26^th August – It is time for our annual dress-up parade at 9.00am. Everyone is welcome to come and watch the parade. We will just need to be mindful of COVID-19 safety protocols, but it is wonderful to be able to celebrate these events together again.

Border Restrictions

The foot and mouth disease is causing airport chaos. In Indonesian countries, the disease has been spreading rapidly. The disease is most contagious to farm animals such as cows, sheep, pigs etc. It can be spread by shoes from returning travellers. Travellers are being advised to either deep clean or throw out shoes and clothing. If the disease comes into Australia it could stop meat production and the wool industry, which could damage our economy.

Households around the world have been hit with inflation. Inflation is when prices go up because of high demand or lack of stock. It is said that inflation in Australia has gone up 6.1% from last year. Inflation was caused because people have more money due to staying home during COVID, meaning when we were out of restrictions people had money to spend on luxury items.

Live Stock Disease

In Indonesia, a foot and mouth disease is spreading through livestock. This disease spreads in soil hence airports make travellers wash or throw out their shoes. If this disease gets into Australia it will devastate the market, no milk, wool or red meat will get sold. Let's all hope Indonesia can fight this disease.

Inflation

Inflation is causing prices to rise making living costs skyrocket. Inflation is the reason why items are more expensive. Inflation is caused by war, pandemics and other things. Due to the pandemic and government handouts, people had more money to spend during lockdowns which have led to manufacturing not being able to keep up with demand pushing prices up in shops. Inflation is an issue around the world and challenging to fix, many families will face challenging times ahead.
