WHAT'S HAPPENING AT ST. PATRICK'S

STEM CLASSES WITH MS BIGHAM

In STEM students have applied their creative thinking and evaluations of their designs in the last fortnight.

In Years 1 and 2, students were introduced to bridges. They designed and constructed a bridge. Whilst this was very creative and innovative, some students enjoyed the construction so much that their designs became ramps or platoons. This made us look further into what defines a bridge. Students were encouraged to use language to describe their bridge. Students enjoyed the testing stage of adding weight and seeing how much weight their bridge can hold.
In Foundation students built houses for a little pig. Students thought about making their materials strong and predicted what materials would make the strongest house. This was challenging with the materials and using tape, but also great fine motor skills, teamwork and positive encouragement to each other was fantastic to see.
Well done Foundation.
In Years 3 and 4, students designed their dream pool, the buzz and excitement in the room with these classes was very exciting and creative. Students put their plans to real life and created wonderful, waterproof, designs. Putting water down their slides and into the pools was a highlight for the students.
In Years 5 and 6, Students worked in teams to build a bridge. This bridge was made of recycled materials and needed to hold weight between the two beams. Students were surprised at how much weight their bridge could hold and evaluated the weak and strongest points of their bridge. Well done!

I look forward to sharing more wonderful and innovative work from STEM.
Classes 3-6 will be exploring LIGHT!
We will be looking at reflection, shadows, refracted light and absorbed light.
We have begun discovering light using the magnetic tiles and creating reflections. It was amazing to see all the students engaged and exploring different shapes and colours with their reflections.
It is my hope that when students come home and share this with families that you can continue to discuss this with them, perhaps make a shadow puppet show, discuss why the car feels hot from the sun (absorbed light) or look through a telescope or microscope (refracted light). There are many examples, point them out and discover this with your child in your daily lives. There is so much science around us, stop and take a moment to explore it.
Thank you Will for bringing your snake skin into STEM, we enjoy observing amazing animal features and nature items as well. We were able to create amazing discussions and wonderings that led into great learning experiences in our classroom!
