Diabetes: Type 1 Challenge
My name is Hunter and I am in year 4 at St. Patrick's Primary School. I love playing minecraft, riding my bike and playing basketball. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2019. I was always thristy, needing to go to the toilet a lot and I was losing weight. There were were times that I felt tired and heavy, this was because my blood sugars were low but we didn't know that then. Mum took me to the doctor (we were on holidays) and they found out I had diabetes so I went to hospital for a few days.
Diabetes is a when your pancreas doesn't make the right amount of insulin. This means your blood sugars go up and down. I have Type 1 Diabetes and there is also a Type 2.
To stay well, I check my blood sugars four times a day and once at night. If I feel low I check then too. At school I check my blood sugars twice a day. Depending on the levels, I have insulin injected and this helps keep the blood sugar levels in a good range. Sometimes I have food and sweet things to help also.
The Type 1 Challenge
The Type 1 challenges is a bike ride for families and individuals who live with Type 1 Diabetes. The event is an awareness raising exercise that also raises funds for research. Today the team stopped by at St. Patrick's to speak to the students and to meet Hunter and his family. More information can be found at Type 1 Challenge Ride.
A big thank-you to students and families for your suppport of our casual day today for JDRF.
